Please plan accordingly.

2010-2011 Transition Night

On Thursday, March 11th at 6:00 pm, Thomas Johnson Middle School’s Guidance Department will host our 2010-2011 school year Transition Night.

Information on how middle school operates, academic expectations, extra-curricular activities and registration for the 2010-2011 school year will be provided.  This is a GREAT opportunity for parents and students to get an understanding of the differences between elementary and middle school.

Additional information will be posted here on the site between now and the end of this school year under the menu selection at the top or right of this page.

MSA Testing, Attendance and You

Parents and Students,

On March 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th students at TJMS will be taking the Maryland School Assessment (MSA). The MSA tests are used to measure the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) of students at the school as they progress toward proficiency in their academic subjects. The tests also determine the amount of funding schools in the district receive from the federal government.

It is imperative that TJMS’s students do well on these assessments. To ensure that students are well rested and mentally prepared for the tests:

  • Please do NOT schedule doctors’ appointments or any events that will pull students from school or keep them out of school on these dates.
  • Please ensure that your child goes to bed EARLY and gets sufficient rest for the test. A well-rested student is a prepared student.
  • Please ensure that your child gets a proper meal the night before each test AND the morning of the each test.
  • Please ensure that students arrive to school ON TIME (8:30 am).
  • Avoid fast food, candy, sodas and chips. Opt for fresh fruit, real juices (Juicy Juice, Caprisun, Apple Juice) and dried fruit (raisins, nuts, cranberries).  Proper nutrition affects a students’ ability to maintain attention, their behavior and their ability to comprehend complex problems.
  • Please avoid after-school extracurricular activities on the days before these tests so that students can be well-rested.
  • Review notes and work which encourage higher order conceptual thinking (questions which ask students to explain, analyze, infer, discuss, prioritize or evaluate, not simply ‘what does this mean‘)

Thank you again for your part in helping our students (your children!) to succeed.  Parents, Administrators and Teachers working together ensure student achievement!

Contacting Your Child's Teacher via E-mail

Did you know that over 75% of all internet traffic is unwanted commercial e-mail (spam) ?

You’ll notice that we do not include directly ‘clickable’ links to teacher’s e-mail addresses on the site anymore. The reason behind this is that in the past, spambots (automated computer programs that go from website to website harvesting e-mail addresses) have gathered e-mail addresses from our site and increased the amount of unwanted e-mail showing up in teachers’ mailboxes over 300% (literally, from 1-2 unwanted e-mails per week to 5-20 e-mails per day). Even with our system’s automatic quarantine of most spam e-mail, that type of traffic unnecessary strain on school resources and teacher time.

As an alternative, we have put the beginnings of our teachers’ e-mail addresses (firstname.lastname) on the site. All you, the parent (or student) need to do is cut and paste those names and add “@pgcps.org” to the end of it to send e-mail to the teacher. The names are located under the Faculty/Staff link at the top of this page (here: http://mrgilliardmusic.com/tjms/?page_id=10 ).
